Thanks Boreas and Bluestreak!
Wow.... That's a lot of good information! I'm going to pass this information along to my son. Looks like he has some research and learning to do.
I suspect any stylus he gets will take a beating as the albums he has are not in very good shape. At this point, until he becomes more sophisticated in this hobby, we are probably better off with something on the cheaper end.
Thanks again for your help. 😃

Barbara, another thing that affects phono performance is the cleanliness of the stylus. It is worthwile to get a stylus brush to start with. It will get rid of any dust that might have been picked up off of the record.
Another cheap way to keep the stylus clean is with a Magic Eraser. It is a Mr. Clean product, and you should be able to find it in the cleaning supplies in the grocery or variety store. It is essentially a high tech sponge. Just cut off an inch by inch block. Then carefully rest the stylus (still attached to the tonearm) on the piece of magic eraser. The Magic Eraser is made of fibers that clean at the microscopic level. Just allowing the stylus to slightly penetrate the surface will allow the sponge to clean it.
In any event, there is a chance that cleaning the stylus can overcome performance issues. Cleaning the vinyl can also help. There are some very fancy and expensive record cleaners. I go cheap. I make a cleaning solution out of two parts distilled water and one part 91% isopropyl alcohol plus a drop of Dawn. I spritz it on the record and wipe it off with a soft cloth, moving in a circular motion around the grooves. Very often you can hear the difference in having clean vinyl. Cleaning the records is particularly important if you pick up used records at thrift stores and the like.
Regards,
D-Ray

Thanks, Dray.
He has gotten his vinyl at garage sales so they are not in great shape.
Thanks again!
