I think a lot of it might have to do with the fact that economically and socially they are disconnected from the power structure. I sort of make a connection between the corruption in Bell, California and Ferguson. Not to suggest the same thing is happening but it seems like the average Ferguson citizen is living in a town whose local government may be just a sort of a job for people rather than a force for the community.
I know that things on the forum here are pretty tense, but I think it is because of perception. Same in Ferguson too but of course that is real life.
It might not be that Brown was completely innocent, and it might be true that Wilson was indeed threatened by him. But the way the local government there has handled the situation is just really bad.....no attempt to show any sort of deference to the idea that their citizens need to be informed as to what is going on. No attempt to connect with the citizens on the part of the police department. No transparency.
They should not have released the video of the robbery until they had some sort of release of information about their investigation into what happened at the scene. If they do not have any sort of definite evidence to support Wilson then they should not have released the video at all. It makes it LOOK like they are smearing someone......they did not need to do that. They could have waited until much later to release it. The video just inflamed the situation without any sort of need to do so since things were already tense. Even if it was not their intent the perception the police department fed is "Look the guy here did the robbery so of course he deserved what he got."
there was no reason at all to do that. Superfluous distraction that made everything worse. And if the ballistic reports show 7-9 gunshot wounds and all they have is the word of Wilson then in retrospect the video release will make their case look even worse.
