Ionizing radiation causes cancer and cosmic radiation is a form of ionizing radiation. Nothing in the visible spectrum causes cancer. It's the concurrent ionizing radiation that gets ya, not the visible light.

Ah so, thanks!

I was hoping our resident engineer would join in

Well, microwaves can kill you, but we all use them. Yes, we need to make it as safe as possible, but it's not like we're not doing anything now that won't kill us.

And if you have a pacemaker get some lead T-shirts.

Seriously, in my days as a Plant Craftsman I handled some serious power equipment, ac driven motor generator sets of the 500 DC amp variety, How great an area would you need to beam this low level microwave over to get enough power for, oh let's say, Washington DC? Look at some of the solar power plants (there is one in Spain) and the area they cover in acres. Or maybe they are thinking of everyone having a dish on the roof just above the lead shingles.

Sure some of those Popular Mechanics future visions have come true - Hammacher Schlemaker will sell you a flying car for $300,000. I may still have the catalog.

Yeah. Man on the Moon. This isn't Buck Rodgers you know! You're talking crazy. I think you need another round of shock therapy.

The space station up there is no dream fellas.

I'd leave energy conversion to the engineers. I'd think heating water would work, but who knows how much energy solar cells can get from 'enhanced' sunlight.

And this is all nothing new. We wouldn't have airplanes if someone didn't try.

Or we could continue our current path, death by overpopulation (starvation), leaving the planet a mined out polluted wreck.

Stopping Nuke plants wasn't my point, Pete. It just seems to me that anytime someone starts to talk about "alternative energy" of any sort, they get lampooned and/or shouted down by........................Who?

Just for you Blue

http://www.gocomics.com/feature_item..._name=no+nukes

Current energy alternates are non viable and mask the greater problem imo.
