This is what seems to be lost on a lot people, equating low speed head on collisions to jumping off buildings. A 30 mph head on collision is equivalent to falling off a three story building. Most DMV booklets have this information.

Just one last time...we're licensed to drive, we don't have the freedom to drive. Whining about our "rights"" being violated by seat belt mandate is moronic. You get your license and you follow the rules. If you get caught violating the rules you get a citation. If you don't want to follow the rules don't drive.

If these morons want to be free to take the risks involved with not wearing their seatbelts then they need to put on their Big Boy Pants and assume ALL the risks.

Their insurance companies, both Car and Medical should then not have to pay for treatment of any injuries they sustain due to not wearing those belts. Plus they should be ineligible for any government assistance for those injuries, such as Medicare, Medicaid, or Disability.

How would that work exactly, especially with regard to their being responsible for harm caused to others?

It won't and that's exactly why it should remain as is.

Mandatory insurance without no-fault hasn't helped victims of uninsured motorists afaik.

We do get into the area of whether insurance companies can refuse an insured his quadruple bypass because they have evidence that he's been wolfing down a half-dozen Big Mac's a week, or refusing the expensive cancer treatment because he's been smoking three packs a day for 50 years.

I know.

All I was trying to do was point out that when people act irresponsibly and it comes back to bite them in the ass it impacts more than just them. Society in general ends up incurring costs also.

I have no beef with seatbelts, as being kin to mostly cops I've seen first hand the outcome of wearing them vs not and I do wear mine.

But what I do have a beef with is The New Child Seats ( they have expiration dates and you'll get fined for using one that's expired ) .. the new Legal Up To Date ones we bought for the grandkids will only fit a 2005 or newer vehicle. They'll buckle in any vehicle once the child is old enough ( 1 year ) to face fwd, but until then they have to face backwards and will not buckle in pre-05 vehicles ''Now''.. and we don't own anything newer than 2001. So I took the child seats apart, ran belts through them and put the child seats back together. Was a real pain in the ass and you can't remove the seats without removing the child first, then take the darn things apart... so they staying in the car until May when I can turn them around facing fwd. The child seats will buckle in any vehicle normal then. Not sure what they were thinking assuming everyone having a kid today would own at least 2005 or newer vehicle to leave the hospital in.

Having once been a menace behind the wheel, seatbelts have saved my life more than once. I don't even think about it anymore, I buckle up every single time.
