I'm not surpised 'we' wouldn't get this... used by whites the 'n' word is usually a slur.
But different - I can call you or a black guy a snotty nosed heap of parrot droppings and not appear racist. So to Uncle Tom - it is a slur exclusively for blacks. Pete

I call other whites at work "redneck" and "honkey" at times. The blacks think it's funny-----but don't repeat it.
I think that's just how it works. And, I suspect that Walter Williams guy is either full of shit or stupid. He probably hasn't had to deal with racism as nasty and downright deadly as it can be----when it's tolerated. Dave

Okay, so this guy has dealt with it and spent half his life fighting overt racism, then once he's inside the academic establishment, he starts telling people 'It exists, don't fight it, just do the best you can.'

Nixon saddled the Repubs with the worst of the southern Democrats and that is the fruit of his labors. We Dems are constantly mocked by the right for being politically correct when we object to racist and intolerant crap. Maybe it's time for the Repubs to come out of the dark ages, too?
