And taking cars off the road with light rail.

This thread has mercifully gone off the rails a bit (pun intended) so I don't feel guilty about posting this shocking photo.
Pop quiz: where was this photo taken?
Hint: not here.

Nope! China.
Can you imagine how much benefit this country could derive from a fleet like that, a fleet of modern, comfortable 200 mph+ passenger trains criss-crossing the country? We used to lead the world in rail transport but, once again, we3 lost out to the petroleum industry.

We don't have a rail industry here any more. We walked away from it 60 years ago in favor of air and over-the-road transport.

Our friends to the north do, Bombardier of Quebec built the Amtrak Accela high speed train that runs up the northeast corridor.
One thing to its benefit is that people traveling by rail are quite civilized unlike the neanderthals who fly.

If the rail ran from downtown LA to downtown SF, sure. If you have to spend an hour or two getting out to the central valley to the rail stations at both ends, you've not gained a thing.

Indeed. Any reason to go to Bakersfield is a bad reason.

They should run the rail from LAX to SFO. Then one could use all the already in place surface infrastructure to get to your final destination.

The airlines wouldn't sit still for that. Moreover, the right-of-way would be insanely expensive. That's why the only viable siting (from a right-of-way acquisition POV) is out in the central valley.
