my response was completely flip-it, void of though or opinion.
Here hows this, 100% of cops should be worshiped. OK? Better?

Truth be know I have not had a cold one in six months. Have not been able to have anything with caffeine or sugar.
The positive is I have lost 35 pounds without dieting.

Off topic, I'm glad that things are looking better for you health-wise. It may not seem like it but I do enjoy the back and forth. Long life and health to you sir.

Of course we all blurt at times. Blurting however is not the same as understanding why a out of ordinary car with an out of the ordinary driver was pulled over.
As to the incident at issue in this thread I believe the Professor had a preconceived belief that he is discriminated against because he is black and refused to shut up because he knew the Pres.

I have found this also exists in the Jewish community (to a lesser degree).
If you think that stereotyping by the police is not a way of life I believe you are wrong. We moved to the "country" a few years ago and I bough my child's mom a brand new shinny Mercedes R350. She is Hispanic and was promptly pulled right over by a young white cop. He could not have been nicer telling her how nice the car was and asked could he see the inside as he was thinking of getting one for his wife. She came home thrilled that someone noticed that she had a big shinny car. I did not have the heart to tell her that the "good old boy cop" had cleverly gotten her to let him search the car. I never filed a complaint as I felt it would only have the locals against us but it sure was not a friendly welcome.
On the flip side I have been accused of favoring white customers over black customers when in a crowded retail setting (many years ago) I failed to realize that an elderly black women had not been cared for. She came up to me in a huff and announced that she would be back with her entire Harlem apartment building to teach me a lesson after closing. She must have been 80 years old.

You are probably correct that it is a cultural thing. I still think that there is a certain desire for payback...kind of a hand and glove sort of thing. And while I don't care for profiling, it probably is an effective tool for law enforcement. Kind of the "What's wrong with this picture" sort of thing.
And as far as "good old boy" cops go, they are trained to do this as a way around securing a search warrant. And while it's no more than a sly maneuver, it isn't illegal.
The tin stars I run with, or star (down to one) have a very low opinion of tactics of this nature. The only thing that they loath more are checkpoints. Which we don't have here in Buggtusssell County. My old buddy the county DA told all of the cops, including the Highway Patrol, that he will not prosecute anyone arrested at a checkpoint as there is no probable cause to stop them in the first place. Also pointed out, "This isn't Nazi Germany."
Well, score one for the good guys, at least as far as I'm concerned. It's a shame that they're the last of a dying breed.

Well, I may not be a Harvard professor who knows someone, but I know better than to mouth off to the cops.
After a while, it raises their competeive spirit. And they can give you 20 hrs on suspicion only...and that's the law, Jack. 99.9% of the time, being nice to Officer Friendly is the smart move.

I think that the facts of the situation will be slow to come out, but they will. There has been racial tension with many folks and the Boston and Cambridge Police Departments for many years. I think that there is blame on both sides here.
I would be outraged as the professor was if I wasn't believed or trusted when I stated who I was, presented two forms of ID and that I was entitled to be at my own domicile (rented or owned). The professor was arrested after jumping ugly (verbally) on the officer. I think that restraint could have been used, and wasn't--then the wagons circled.
Fortunately for me, the last time I had trouble with my stuck front door, a neighbor who bothered to get to know me years ago, helped me rather than calling the cops.

Well, if I were the cop, I don't think I would have arrested him on his property unless he sucker punched me. Hell, I know I wouldn't have.
But the "prefesser" wasn't asking for it, he was begging for it, and he got it.
Come on folks, cops are people too. If you're nice to them, by and large, they're nice to you. 20 yrs ago, if he'd have pulled the same shit on the Houston, TX cops...his ass would have been found floating in the bayou the next day.
Just a thought...you don't need to go looking for trouble, it will find you easy enough,
Chas
