So, held to a higher standard? Maybe, to the extend that this "fourth branch's" role is to help keep the other branches "honest".
What really appears to be happening is that, much like the rest of Washington DC, the fourth branch is becoming more dysfunctional every day.

To begin with the word is role, not roll.
Besides that, what I see is that the DC press is now totally dependent on news leaks and quite possibly some of these cannot be verified. I will buy your theory if this WH conducted proper press conferences instead of constantly giving out 'alternate facts'.
How often does Trump ever answer questions directly from the press other than softball interviews with Fox News?

Yes, the pattern is becoming clear. Whell wasn't paying attention in English class. Certainly doesn't help one's arguments when one's grammar is so poor. His reading comprehension is poor, as well, as I pointed out elsewhere.

Whell's role here is becoming quite obvious, deflect and promote alternate facts.

You can buy or not buy whatever you want. What is relevant is that this has been the function of the press in this country since its founding, and is not subject to whomever may be the current resident of the White House.
You may be correct that the DC press may be dependent on leaks. Some might suggest that this is because of departure from long-standing journalistic methods or ethics. Some might ascribe this to journalistic laziness. Others might see it as a result of newspaper budget cuts, or possibly journalists whose desire to push a narrative has supplanted a desire to report the news. Whatever the cause or causes, the product quality is in significant decline.

Can't deal with the subject matter, so attack the poster. That's just how you roll.....
...or is it role?

I would suggest that that is exactly what they are doing with this dishonest president, his ruling family, and the conniving republican party who are all practicing the teachings of Hitler to divide this country so very well. I am constantly astounded at the lies this president spews that always go unchallenged by his own party.
