Not past the edge of our land but yes because we feel we have no choice. They hand out guns to anyone as long as they are not drooling on their shirtfront.

At the moment we have a .177 and a 6mm pellet gun not lethat but I would hate to get one of the 6mm balls in the face. That pistol has a muzzle velocity in excess of 500FPS. Ted was not a happy boy. Especially when the murder rate data was presented. And when Piers asked him if he thought it was right that any armed citizen could summarily kill someone unarmed and be released simply on the claim that he "felt" endangered. (Aside from the Martin case.)

the fact that one was not taken at the time of the assault sounds fishy. Even a negative result would demonstrate some worry about a broken nose. If one was taken odd that the lawyers for Zimmerman will not announce that one was performed.
Getting one's head slammed against the concrete would be an automatic brain CT in any emergency room these days, just to protect the ER doctors from lawsuits.

Maybe the kid never broke his nose or bashed his head in the concrete. Maybe he just "got up in his face".
