Why isn't it pronounced "hoook-ed oh-n p-hoe-nyks"?

If you've never seen the word before, p-hoe-nyks ain't a bad shot.

I learned to read with the sound - it - out phonics method in the early 1950s, of course we loved classic Greek names like Aristophanes (aristo-fains) and were befuddled with words like Yosemite (yose-might).

Mike, did the UN ever have the right to simply hand the Israelis control of Palestine and defend their efforts to take property from existing residents in the first place?

Maybe the UN should decide the Chinese can do a better job of running Michigan than Michiganders do?

Laugh all you want, that's what far right zealot Alex Jones suggested was going to happen to Texas when Obama was elected......(Or something similar to it.)..........

Who knows? That particular piece of geography has been tussled over for thousands of years. In its history its been claimed by everyone from the Persians to the Romans to the Christians to the Muslims. Over hundreds of years the Jews were either kicked out or left due to persecution. In all those years there never was a "Palestine" or an "Israel": they were recognized as geographic references rather than states.

Fast forward to more recent history when the Ottoman Empire lost it in WWI and the Brits controlled it. The Brits then invited the Jews to return with the Balfour Declaration. Thereafter, the Brits handed the area over to the new State of Israel. So, at least in terms of recent history, Israel has a more recent claim to the area than the Palestinians do, IMHO.

The claimant du jour will say when the clock of history stopped, of course to their advantage. Dealing with present cdx and how to reach a lasting agreeable accommodation makes infinitely more practical sense but is less politically expedient and advantageous to the extremists driving this ongoing nightmare.

To whom do you apply the label "extremists", and what is/are their respective agendas?

Mainly the no-compromise Fundamentalist religious elements on all three sides, Moslem, Hebrew, and dogma-centered Christians who are mostly American. Their agendas are whatever leads to regional, or better, global dominance by whatever means necessary. The American Jesus weasels will share the spoils with a regionally dominant Hebrew population to fulfill what they deem Biblical prophesy for Christ's return and perpetual reign.
