Agreed. I would add, "Or lending it's (government) considerable influence to advance a particular religion." A room full of kids being forced to share a moment of prayer led by a teacher who insists it be in the context of his or her religious beliefs is wrong. Unless it is a privately run, religion based school. That's different.

I will agree with the Bible thumpers that it's also wrong for the government to force people to refrain from displaying religious icons during holy days, (Manger Scenes, Menorrahs, and so on.). I've never understood why people take such offense. I was raised a Methodist. But, it never offends me to see a Star of David, a Star and Crescent, a Bhudda, a Shiva or a sign promoting Atheism. I find the diversity makes life all the more interesting.

I believe something along the lines of "History will be kind to me for I intend to write it."

Ah, yes. That's the one.

Along with, "I may be drunk, Ma'am. But you are urgly. And in the morning I shall be sober."

They taught it when I was in school, but I learned more as a kid from the specials on PBS.

Also, evey year they started at the explorers and worked up to the present, so later events (like ww2) got short thrift (we ran out of time).

School history books are weak, often misleading. Modern folks have little stomach for the evil of man. They like their people are nice theories, and history refutes this.

I've got a great little read on this topic but for the life of me can't remember the author! Tomorrow for sure.
