The air raid alarm was on a pole across the street from from our home. One morning it went off at 2:00 AM. My wife said
lets get in the car and go. I said where, if this is it there won't be any place that won't be so bloody radioactive that is worth going to.
It turned out to be a false alarm.
We (Bell Canada) helped build the BMEWS radar line and I was asked to go. Having just married I politely refused. There was a story about a chap who signed up for a second tour (the money was real good). He came home for Christmas and New Years but did not tell his wife until he was ready to leave. End of February he gets a letter telling him that in April there was going to be a lot of love making at his house and if he wanted some he damn well had better be there.
