Although most German political leaders never comment American election campaigns, it is high time that Angela Merkel shows her colours, in my opinion. I know why she does not, the reasons are obvious, apart from the fact mentioned above - anyway: a lot of American voters would like to know something about the attitude of the German government towards the presidental candidates.

By the way - the German Secretary of State, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, calls Trump a "Hassprediger" (hate preacher).

It could be argued that any head of state who voiced an opinion regarding the suitability of a candidate running to be the head of state of another nation, particularly an allied nation, was trying to influence the outcome of the election. Most leaders try to avoid the appearance of doing so.
