When I took maternity leave over thirty years ago, I applied for disability and received disability checks, which were less than what my paycheck would have been. Applying for disability was/is standard practice for maternity leave.

If I remember correctly, one could be on disability for six weeks. After that point, there were no more disability benefits and no guarantee that I would have a job to return to.

I have a real problem considering pregnancy and birth a 'disability' and quite symbolic of our twisted sense of 'family values'.

Mine's working fine here in spite of the glitches elsewhere, otherwise it's always about accountability whether public or private practice.

Why do we need this law now? I thought ACA just took care of this making people independent of the employer.
You're confusing health insurance with income security.

And as long as you have no problem, that's all that matters!

My wife got six weeks with both kids. After the first she went back part time. Now she stays home since two kids in daycare is financial suicide. Besides I can't see a mother returning to work and leaving a six week baby in day care. The whole system sucks, we should take a lesson from Canada.

Bully for you. Sometime there's no problem, sometimes there is. That you don't give a shit about any other women's problems when it comes to maternity leave should come as no big surprise to anybody.
