Early surge of Democratic mail voting sparks worry inside GOP

The wide Democratic lead in mail voting so far has been the subject of urgent discussions among top GOP officials, according to people familiar with the conversations.

The margins are “stunning” — and bad news for Republicans up and down the ballot, said longtime GOP pollster Whit Ayres. While the Republican Party is focused on getting voters out on Election Day, he noted that older voters who have traditionally supported Republicans are most concerned about being infected with the novel coronavirus and could choose to stay home if the outbreak intensifies as the election nears.

Texas governor limits election drop boxes to one per county in sprawling state

The decision has already drawn fire from Texas Democrats. The state's Democratic party chair, Gilberto Hinojosa, labeled it a "blatant voter suppression tactic" in a press release. The group Let America Vote also blasted the move.

"The governor is making it harder for people to vote in the middle of a global pandemic that has claimed the lives of over 16,000 Texans," the group said in a statement. "It is a shameful, blatant act of voter suppression that will disproportionately impact the large number of Black and Latinx voters in Texas' biggest counties."

Former Democratic presidential candidate and Texas native Julian Castro similarly cast Abbott's proclamation as an effort to make voting "harder for fellow Texans."

The Republican governor, he tweeted, "knows how angry Texans are with Trump's failure, (Republican Sen. John) Cornyn's failure and his own to keep Texans safe and our people working."

Five Republican senators facing tough re-election races voted for a Democratic-led bill Thursday to block the Trump administration from supporting a lawsuit to overturn Obamacare.

The senators include Susan Collins of Maine, Joni Ernst of Iowa, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Martha McSally of Arizona, and Dan Sullivan of Alaska.

Alaska's other senator, Lisa Murkowski, a Republican who doesn’t face voters until 2022, also voted with Democrats on the measure.

The legislation, offered by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., received 51 votes — short of the 60 needed to advance, due to overwhelming GOP opposition.

Coal exec who opposed safety regulations now seeks black-lung benefits

Former coal CEO Robert E. Murray, who has fought federal regulations on the industry, has filed an application with the U.S. Department of Labor for black lung benefits, according to a published report. West Virginia Public Broadcasting and Ohio Valley ReSource report the former head of Murray Energy said on the form that he is still board chairman of the company but can no longer serve as president and CEO due to his health. Murray has fought federal mine safety regulations for years.
