The appropriate response to the Ebola scare mongering.

New Yorkers shrug.

It shows the difference between a city of Democrats and Republicans. Dallas residents run around scared shitless while NYC residents order another beer. I much prefer the latter approach to life.

Two of Dallas' five Congressional representatives are Democrats. When voting is looked at city wide it's about evenly split, and trending blue.

I live about a mile from the infected nurses and walk the neighborhood daily going to grocers, the bank, my mail drop, etc. It's been life as usual except when the media was around.

Scared Shitless in Dallas signing off.

WLS radio here in Chicago had former CDC acting director Richard Besser on this morning. The guy made more sense of this situation than any talking head on radio or TeeVee I've heard so far in this thing. We got FOX blaming the Ebola virus on Obama, MSNBC blaming it on budget slashing Congressional Republicans, and the mainstreamers fighting each other for who can come up with the latest terrifying lead story.

Besser says nothing like what's happening in Africa will ever happen here. The number of cases here is minimal and will remain minimal. The fact is that there have been two American health care workers infected in Africa, both were caring for patients extremely ill with Ebola and extremely contagious. That's it. Two. Doctors Without Borders have had hundreds upon hundreds of health care workers providing active care for patients in Africa and to date, not one of them has contracted Ebola or spread it to anybody else. Besser believes that health care workers returning to this country from Africa should closely monitor themselves and that all it requires is a temperature check twice per day for 21 days. The first time they get a reading above normal, they seek specific care. Besser does not believe that any quarantining of health care workers in this country is necessary. Cases of infection in this country are being treated in a much more controlled setting than in Africa. Wards here have one or two Ebola cases on them and are strictly monitored for appropriate precautions. In Africa there are hundreds of patients oozing body fluids in ward after ward. The situation is totally different in Africa. Besser does not believe it will ever become that problematic here. Why? "It's too hard to contract this infection unless you're in open contact with someone, or providing care for someone who's incredibly ill."
