I think it's likely since the Romans played around in "Germania" quite a bit, though often at a price. Also, the successor of the Roman Empire, the so-called Holy Roman Empire", was centered around a part of Europe where Germanic languages predominated.
I think also that German is more a contributor to other languages than it is a beneficiary, notably Dutch and the various Scandinavian languages. Through the influence of the Angles, Saxons and Vikings, Germanic languages also had a profound influence on English. Even the French owe something to the Germans in this regard. The Franks (from whom France gets its name) spoke a Germanic language which has influenced modern French. France also has a lot of Celtic influence from the Gauls but that's tempered by the fact that the Gauls got pretty thoroughly Romanized.
