The bottom line of this piece is that the GOP establishment has for years appealed to the base's prejudices to get them to vote against their own best interests (which would actually be better served by the Democrats). The GOP establishment is the party of corporate management (who could actually care less about abortion, gay rights, etc.) and the Democratic party is the party of labor.
The blue-collar base is starting to catch on, but instead of voting for Democrats (and all the hated blacks, gays, Hispanics and secular humanists among them), they want to force a hostile takeover of the party from the industrialists and refashion the party in their own image (see below).

Nixon's "silent majority" were primarily wage slaves.
Prejudices are always getting in the way of best interests.
The Democratic party is the party of diversity, of which labor is but a part.

Yep, both parties are comprised of coalitions. However, the GOP is made up of two groups that have opposing interests - corporate industrialists and corporate wage slaves. It's the prejudices (along with gullibility) of the latter that allows the former to garner their support.
Trump seems to be pulling back the curtain on the ruse and it has the establishment quite upset. Corporate industrialists alone will never an election.

"Donald Trump on Saturday night called on Marco Rubio to drop out of the presidential race and said he wants to go head-to-head with Ted Cruz.
"I think Marco Rubio had a very, very bad night and personally I call for him to drop out of the race," Trump said of the Florida senator at press conference in West Palm Beach, Fla." The Hill

Looks like Marco had a bad night.

I'm just glad someone is finally prying them apart.

I think Trump would ally himself with the moneyed interests if he got into power.
I think that populist bullshit is just a weapon he will discard after he no longer needs it.

In other words, he's just a regular Republican after all.
