The Magnavox is visually stunning. I'm sure it sounds great. Does is smell good too?

I am impressed - actually awed by that beauty.

Regards,

D-Ray

Thanks, Guys. As Bob said about his; "...it is the labor of love.".

I was listening to Celtic music, and some Ancient Cantigas last night. I still can't get over the sound. The bass not so much, my SS gear is much tighter in the bass, but the mids and highs are so sweet it's almost spooky.

Regards,
Dave

People laugh at me for saying that............

But, it's true. Tube amps, especially the old ones, put off a faint scent of ozone and, I'm guessing, heated dust.

Dave

What size is the big cap in the power supply, Dave?

That spookiness is the much touted 2nd order harmonics is my guess.

I'm really just a toob noob copying my betters over at AK, (GordonW, Dave Gillespie, Two Dogs, et al.)

The big cap? I think it's a 30 + 30 multicap. Part of the mod Matt did. And, he really seems to know his stuff. I'd be afraid to mess with it.

The bass is good, Bob. I'm just sayin' my McIntosh and Luxman amps are somewhat tighter and deeper in that regard. That puts the Maggie in a pretty esteemed class, I'd say.

(I hear the Edcor OPT upgrade is the bees knees for tightening the bass, though.)

Regards,
Dave

The one in the clamp. That's a multi?

I've followed a bunch of the guys at AK and they have been bumping up the cap at C2 to 100uf and even higher to tighten up the bass. Leave C1 at it's rated uf as the rectifier can't take the extra power. I'm a little nutz - I put a huge 330uf in that spot in my 175. That's a 6V6gt based amp and it significantly tightened up the bass. C2 is where the output transformers get their power, they haven't caught fire, yet.

There have been a lot of 9300 series amps showing up at AK. If I were you I would send a PM to GordonW and see what he recommends, he is the Maggie king, IMO. He hails from near Dalton, Ga. and is a super nice guy.

Here's a pic of the 175 before I put that 330uf cap up on top. Magnavox badge from the console I gutted. I'll have to take a pic with the 330uf mounted. I went with birds eye maple & padauk?. That fiddleback maple that you used is great!

My bad....It's says 50M + 50M, and there is a smaller cap connected to it underneath.

Regards,
Dave
