What has the species done with it? Turned it into a fucking casino. The system has been taken over by day traders, hedge funders, algorithmic computer trading systems, etc. Long-term "investors" like some of us, have always been in it not only to have a place for their retirement funds to grow, but who are the participants who contribute to capitalism functioning as it should.

Mankind will fuck up a pleasant little wet dream.
Pure capitalism? A creation of capitalist ideology, widely internalized. But capitalism as we know it is an evolution of culture, defined by statute and custom. No part of it is found in nature, physics, or revealed will of God. It's most extreme tenants, that owners own ALL surplus value created by operations, and that material return to owners is the ONLY thing that matters, could be treated as changeable on the whim of any lawmaking authority. If the collective mind was opened up to it.

The present gnashing of teeth is the realization that this evolution no longer serves nor respects traditional American middle class...a slow awakening.

The "evolution" of capitalism and of the equity markets is just more confirmation of the ugliness of our highly over-regarded "human nature."

Mankind are locusts with a little intelligence and too much technology. Pretty much everywhere we go, we lay waste to the planet. Climate change may correct all this.

And if I might add...climate change is not a catastrophe for the planet. It's likely going to be a catastrophe for mankind, and a bunch of other species...but the planet will be fine.

How fine will the planet be? If the catastrophe rids the planet of our species, it will be much better off than if our species survives.

I point out that certain "locusts" are the only known entities in the universe who see anything wrong with any of this.
