It can be very close in swing states and is simply a matter of voter turnout. I don't think candidates can impact this very much at all as the campaign organizations can. Imagine if everyone could vote from home, we will see a very different electoral landscape. Probably will never happen or not in every state.

California has a Vote By Mail option and that's how I vote. I sit down at the dining table with the ballot and my laptop and fill out the form. If I'm unfamiliar with an issue or a candidate, I look it/her up on the interwebs to become better informed. It has certainly changed the way I vote and I suspect the same is true for others.
