Forgive the arrogance, this is why I was the first male in my family to not enlist: screw the brainwashing and giving up of intelligent autonomy.

My oldest son scored 130 on his ASVAB and he is enlisted.
He also has a college degree.
One time an officer asked him why he didn't apply to OCS and he replied, "I can't, I scored too high on my ASVAB."

Same thing just happened to my son. Because he was honest about having toked in the past, the AF would not take him.

First off, we had a draft then. Now we have an all-volunteer armed force. Also, in the '50s, we had huge numbers of people who were veterans of WW2 and Korea. Those factors combined meant that a very large percentage of able-bodied adult males had served.

Yeah, and if I had my way we would still have one. Plus we would have universal military service. And yes, that would include all of Mitt's boys and your buddy Pete.

How on earth is this talking down to you? I'm not talking down to you. I'm just pointing out that circumstances in the '50s were quite different from those today.
So, is this your little violent fantasy about what you do to people who "talk down" to you?
