This is the main reason why some GOP leaders are not only distancing themselves from Trump, but vocally opposing him. For some, this may be too late and these people need to be targeted.

Agreed. I think the polls show that. If she was a stellar candidate, the margins between her and Trump would be far greater.
I also think the control will depend on how the GOP spends its last few weeks. Ryan started with a separation from Trump. I think some carefully worded ads could go a very long ways in gaining support from the GOP public,
Something like
"Trump has clearly demonstrated personal values we find appalling. However, our core beliefs are solid. We ask that you help us put the GOP in charge of the house and the senate. Doing so will effectively defeat Hillary. Please vote for your republican candidate."
If they would run ads something like this, they would get a lot of votes.
My $0.02 worth.

MOSCOW (The Borowitz Report)—Calling the Republican nominee’s behavior “completely indefensible,” the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, cancelled a joint campaign appearance with Donald Trump on Monday.
Putin, who had been scheduled to campaign alongside Trump at a rally in Columbus, Ohio, said that he would make no joint appearances with the billionaire for the remainder of the campaign.
“As the father of two daughters, I cannot condone or defend Mr. Trump’s behavior,” the Russian leader said in a curt official statement.
In addition to cancelling his appearance with Trump, Putin, who had been expected to spend thirty-one million rubles, or roughly half a million dollars, on Trump campaign ads, is pulling those funds and will instead “focus on down-ballot races,” the statement said.
Appearing on CNN, Trump’s campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, attempted to downplay the Putin defection by claiming that Trump still has the support of many other totalitarian dictators.

Trump: 'My shackles are off'

Trump's "new" burn-it-all-down strategy will circle the Trumpkin wagons, excluding undecided voters with a concience and sense of reality awareness.
Whether he sheds any more present support remains to be seen, but if the stalwart Trumpkins are any indication, they are ready to go down with the ship and take anyone and anything they can with them.
And good riddance, we may not always know who our friends are, but our enemies will self identify by word and actions.

He is probably going senile.
On a different note, Trump Taj Mahal closed it's doors this Monday in Atlantic City.
Still bears his name though not his property anymore, but the timing is not good if you live in NJ.
