It may come as a shock, but I don't have cable, and Fox doesn't come in very well where I live. I tend to watch international news, although I have to gird my loins against creeping European soc__lism lol.

Finn, I'm uncertain that saying people that often live very sheltered lives tend to be (modern meaning) liberal is a ringing endorsement And have you seen the movies lately? lol.

Intellectuals have been behind some of the worst humanitarian disasters in human history.

Hitler, Tojo and Mussolini intellectual? The depravity of man is non-ideological.

As for arts and innovation, could you imagine our nation with conservatives in charge of the entertainment and high-tech industries (the pillars of our economy, BTW)? We'd have to listen to Toby Keith or Lee Greenwood, watch Mel Gibson movies and learn again to use the slide rule.

I got the best education of my life in the Navy. Not because of the military brainwashing bullshit, but because of the fact that they kept me travelling. I visited more foreign countries in four years than most people do in a lifetime.

It taught me that America is both a wonderful and tragic place. We are capable of so much good but instead choose the path of narrow minded self interest. We'd rather cut each other down than work towards a rising tide. We'd rather worship corporate Gods and Plutocracy than pull together and makes sure all are treated well. So much unrealized potential.

I love my country, but I am losing faith in my people.

Dave

I'm not anti-intellectual Finn And I agree that the will to power is non ideological.

But it can be ideology, that one knows best for another, and will force betterment, that has been at the heart of the monstrous killing systems. Even the nazis sprung from the progressive movement from the early 1900s, eugenics, social engineering etc. And don't forget the commies.

Whenever I think of slide rules I think of the moon shot for some reason. Goodness were those guys amazing.

I'm hard-pressed to think of any of the well-traveled people I know (and there a bunches) who are conservative. Conversely, just about all the people I know who go on vacations to the same places every year or all-inclusive resort enclaves are conservative. I think there's a little hard-wiring involved - fear of the unknown.

The Nazis executed intellectuals.

That they disagreed with. The connection between the eugenics of the progressive west in the 1900s and the Nazi system are clear if you dig into that era. There were quite a few folks who thought their ideology was good even if they regretted their tactics.

Perhaps, but it's today's conservatives who proclaim an inherent inferiority of anyone other than WASP's.

Agreed to a degree, the reactionaries do pool on the right. The GOP on a national level is every bit as activist as the left, I'd say.

By definition, they are the far right.
