Now compare how often engineers release bad parts, which is probably daily, to how often unions go on strike. Anymore the latter is zero because they gave up strikes in their collective bargaining agreement. Even if they didn't, they still only went on strike once a decade or so.
Having said all that, I am still a fan JIT. When an engineer released a bad part prior to JIT there were often semi loads of parts that needed to be scrapped or reworked. With JIT problems can be caught and fixed before they become enormous.
I'm not a big fan of six sigma, however.

Okay, maybe my Union comment was a little over the top…
But I do feel you may be misplaced to blame engineers and there changes. You’re more likely to see disruptions from things like, a fire, Tornado or a business going under.
Building cars all your changes are coming before home line tryout and vehicle launch… This is where Proto-Type meets Production and changes are made in order to support these realities… Rule number one production rules.
Once in production you rarely see engineering changes that effect production. What usually occurs are issues relating to tool ware or customers TGW’s that may force a tooling change.

LOL!
I'm not a tea partier (and I'm pissed they copped my favorite flag!) but 'round here they're grass roots and very organized. I'd be surprised if they still aren't a factor.

Tea Partiers are not grass roots. They are people that spend their own time and money to argue in favor of an agenda that is led by monied interests.

10-4.
You and I appear to have different perspectives. I worked on the electronics and software parts of the vehicle. We were less susceptible to tooling wear but still had to deal with parts disruptions due to earthquakes, fires, etc.
In the old days we used to get burned every time we discovered a software bug. The old control modules were potted and used masked ROM. They had to be destroyed if the software bug affected our certification validity. Those events generated a lot of scrap that JIT could have avoided. Things got a lot better when JIT was combined with FLASH memory technology.

It's not fear. It's disgust at the ignorance of the TP (and their obliviousness to the ignorance).

Since the Tea Party's principle tactic is fear mongering and the people sucked in by it are by nature fearful people looking for easy answers and demagogic leaders, your assessment of the comments you quoted comes as no surprise. The truth is, we don't fear the Tea Party but hold it in utter contempt (the organization, not the people).
You may have noticed that the Tea Party isn't really in the news any more and their rallies are poorly attended and devoid of the charter buses, Jumbotrons and celebrities that characterized the earlier events. You realize what this means, don't you? It means the Koch brothers, Dick Armey and the other Tea Party instigators and financiers are done with you. You've served you purpose and now you can just sit down, shut up and let the "adults" get down to business.
Malcolm X described you people to a T.
"I'm gonna tell you like it really is. Every election year these politicians are sent up here to pacify us! They're sent here and setup here by the White Man! (Substitute "rich man".)
"I say and I say it again, you've been had. You've been took. You've been hoodwinked, bamboozled, led astray, run amok."
