I don't think a battle of attrition with Russia is ever good strategy.

There was a "space marines" corp in some SF stories I read a long time ago, that had the saying "You are in the Marines to die. The fleet will take you where you can die." Make that Russian army and it fits, except they don't have much fleet now....
