The image of armed troops surrounding the Capitol, they believed, was incongruous with a ceremony cementing a peaceful transfer of power.

So, contrary to the General's characterization, the National Guard was authorized, but the mindset of the various law enforcement agencies on that day was "we'd rather not use them". Ultimately, the actions of the protesters forced their hand, but I think human mis-judgment and human error by many folks played quite a bit into the events of that day.
Next time I accidentally run into a car parked in a no parking zone, I will claim that that car should have been parked there so therefore I am not at fault.

Blaming a lack of defense for the crimes of the offender, particularly when the commander of the defensive forces also happens to be the instigator of the offensive action, is some weird kind of blame-shifting. Trump is guilty either way you look at it, but somehow you think your duplicitous, bad-faith argument somehow exonerates your Dear Leader. Fail.

You don't get to blame the Capitol police for what your Orange Pustule has wrought, Mike. Most humans have learned that lesson by the age of 7.

Shared by a FB friend. The power of propaganda, and how a good man gave his life to counter the fascist propaganda that Reich-wing media spouts even today.

Beloved Children of the Holocaust

1939 was a year that would go down in history for a number of reasons. It was, of course, the year when Hitler would begin World War II by invading Poland. It also happened to be the year when Gone With the Wind would take the cinematic world by storm. Leslie Steiner, a Jewish man of Hungarian descent, born in London, would play a significant role in both events. You see, we know him better as Leslie Howard, the actor to whom Scarlett crooned, “Ashley, Ashley…” He was already a veteran of stage and screen and a heartthrob, but Gone With the Wind catapulted him to mega stardom.

Leslie Howard walked away from it all in 1940, buying out his contract and forfeiting royalties in favor of writing and producing anti-Nazi propaganda films for the British government. This move earned him the enmity of the Nazi leadership in general, but especially that of Joseph Goebbels, the German propaganda minister. On June 1, 1943, Leslie Howard was one of 17 people aboard Flight 777, a civilian aircraft flying from neutral Portugal to Bristol. By mutual agreement, such civilian planes flew safely back and forth with great frequency. On that day, however, six Junkers Ju 88 fighters attacked the defenseless Douglas DC-3, causing it to crash in the Bay of Biscay and killing all aboard.

All of Britain was shocked, but not so the Nazis. Many historians believe it was Minister Goebbels himself who ordered the attack and delighted in the death of his nemesis. Leslie Howard died at age 50, a superstar, but one whose greatest role was not on the silver screen but in the theatre of life.

^^^ A crime echoed in the interception of the flight carrying journalist Roman Protasevich over Belarusian airspace. He wasn't killed outright, but hasn't been heard form since Oct 2021/

Fantasy Role-Playing Is Hurting America
How the cult of imagined heroism is bringing down our nation’s institutions.

Bannon tapped into this, Senior reports, when he acquired Breitbart News and realized that the comments section could become more of a community for certain angry, lonely individuals than “the town they live in, the old bowling league.” He noted that the comments section “could be weaponized at some point in time. The angry voices, properly directed, have latent political power.”

Senior asked whether Bannon considers what he has done in propagating political media and in energizing populist nationalist movements to be “the gamification of politics.” He replied that this is exactly what he’s doing: “I want Dave in Accounting to be Ajax in his life.”
... or Whell in HR, as boring and pointless a job as can be imagined, living his fantasy.

Speaking of Stevie B.

Steve Bannon said he's willing to go to prison to support Trump
Mighty big talk for what likely be a light sentence. Of course if the GQP manages to get the former guy back in the WH this will all go away.
Uh Steve, you're going to jail for trying to protect tRump. Don't get it twisted.

Washington (AP) — A conservative TV channel is presenting viewers with an “alternate universe” of how the deadly siege at the U.S. Capitol unfolded on Jan. 6, 2021, a new research report finds.

Newsmax has broadcast at least 40 false claims or conspiracy theories about the attack since June, when a House committee began televising its evidence about the role former President Donald Trump and his allies played in the day’s events, according to NewsGuard, a tech firm that monitors misinformation.

“If you’re watching Newsmax, you may come away with an entirely different feeling of what happened at the hearings, and what happened on Jan. 6,” NewsGuard analyst Jack Brewster said of the findings.

One of the worst Fake News outlets, OANN, is being dropped by the last major cable company carrying it. Good riddance.

The future of One America News, which established itself as a powerful voice in conservative media by promoting some of the most outlandish falsehoods about the 2020 election, is in serious doubt as major carriers drop it from their lineups and defamation lawsuits threaten to drain its finances.

Exclamation Oh No He Did-dent!

Trump's Former Defense Secretary Calls B.S. On National Guard Claim

Seems like I read somewhere (maybe here?) about a claim that tRump had authorized the NG deploy on Jan. 6. With so many Reich-Wing deflections, finger pointing and blame shifting for the "largely peaceful" mob that assaulted the Capitol, it's hard to keep up.
