I wouldn't say 'magical thinking,' I'd say 'identity politics.' The guy in the article feels 'his people' are disrespected in the national culture now, but Trump is on his side.

Trump is an 'only money matters' guy actually, and would be incredulous at the suggestion that he should give even a tiny shit about a swamp. But he has been able to stroke the TP sorts feelings of alienation, creating a bond that, for now, transcends everything for them. He's theirs, in their minds at least, and they're his.
