The commies found a lot of 'useful idiots' early on. (I think that's harsh - their propaganda is very appealing)
Tailgunner Joe (I had to look that up, thanks Finn

) was a phony for sure, but just because he used it to try to gain power doesn't mean it didn't exist. Heck quite a few HAD gone to communist party meetings etc. Note I did not say joined. Applebaum says 'mid 20th century', very vague
Today, all these years later, Putin is straight out of the KGB, still trying to hurt us, bring us down, often using the same methods.
Agreed the communist party wasn't winning any elections in the 80s/90s (understatement). However I did live through that time and they always had a certain percentage of (at least) sympathy. Going a little further back, I was playing Jefferson Airplanes' 'Volunteers' in my bedroom years ago and my dad stuck his head in. He asked me why I was playing the Soviet anthem.
Even now communism is a thing in the US among certain groups, even though it has killed far more people than the Nazis. Again, their propaganda is appealing... but we know the horrific reality documented by Anne and Aleksandr, thank goodness.
A lot of what Applebaum says is reassuring, that 70% +/- are still for NATO and our close alliance with / leadership of the free world. I hope she's right.
