The only reason there is religion is because our species developed self-awareness. The resulting fact is that as a species we can't accept death, much less all too frequent stupid, meaningless, absurd accidental death along with the violent malicious death that we perp on each other on a regular basis. Religion is one of those interesting arguments - one one hand you can't prove there is a God, but on the other hand you can't prove there is not. :-)

For me it's more a question of why humans appear to need the threat of an angry god and a hell in order to treat each other, and the beasts and the children humanely?
