Those speaks are impressive. I'm not sure I could train my ear to evaluate speakers that well, but I enjoyed your review. If I head out to the coast, expect me to barge in and take a listen to them.

10,000 posts! Congrats! If Dumptruck is out of the Ewave badges let me know Dave. I have two sets. You're welcome to a set if you would like.

I love my Vandies.
I've run Vandersteens since 1992, starting with a pair of 1Bs.
But, then I love all of my speakers...............
Anyhow,
I started this project to have some high efficiency speaks for my Roberts tube amps. However, in the process, one of those has developed a nasty noise issue.............
I'm not sure, as I posses no test equipment beyond my DMM, but, I think it might be the output transformer. It starts "crackling", independent of volume setting, after it's on for about 5 minutes or so. The Akai troubleshooting manual suggests it's either the transformer, or a couple resistors. And both resistors check good.

i've experienced a little of that. Tightening up the sockets, where the pins go in fixed it.

Hopefully I fixed that picture issue.. if it doesn't appear in the check it out on my page. I had chosen private on the picture album. I'm guessing that's where the trouble was. http://www.politicalchat.org/picture...3&pictureid=13

Well, resistors are cheap, and easy to come by.
I've also gut the guts out of an AKAI single ended reel to reel sitting out in the shop, hum problem. Along with an oscilloscope and a meter which reads the values of a resistor whenever it's under load. I just don't have the time or patience to go out there and teach myself how to use it all.
I realize that you'd rather eat shit and die, but why don't you look into a used Chinese tube amp. I'm running Dared VP-20's, bought them for $500 a few years ago, came with Rooskie tubes, JJ 6L6-GC's, RCA black plate AU7's, and Raytheon AX7's.
They're pretty transparent. I've tried a lot of different valves, but went back to the JJ's and the RCA black plates, did change out the AX7's to Raytheon black plates...bought 'em on E-Bay...supposed to be RCA black plates, but they're an improvement over the Raytheon gray plates, so I'm happy. And they were cheap.
Anyway, the build quality of a lot of that Chinese stuff is pretty good, and if you buy it cheap enough you can probably get your money back.
Then again, you can always pick up a rehabbed Dynaco 70.
Maybe it's snob appeal, but I don't get to excited by solid state amps anymore.
