Here's the rub: Zimmerman had a gun, not something personal like a shiv, shank, knife, car antenna, rock, brass knuckles or ice pick.

And, if he DID have one of those (regardless of who caused the engagement), the kid would have been able to disengage unless the ad hoc neighborhood watchman knew just where to hit a man the FIRST time.

Reality? No gun = no death.

Unless you're saying puffy wannabe boy is a stone cold killer.
Perhaps prisons are filled with drug offenders. I draw my conclusions from the early 80's at the Missouri State Penitentiary, and they didn't house short time offenders there.

Maybe the "nice" prisons were filled with drug offenders, but we dealt exclusively in the hard core predators. And locking them up at MSP didn't make them any better citizens.

You know, I actually hated convicts for years, but have since tempered my opinion of them. However, I still realize that there are some really bad actors, and they're all not doing life & 50 yet.

As far as the topic at hand, I favor allowing people to arm themselves, and granting them the legal standing to defend themselves.

That's simply my opinion on the matter. And however the situation in Florida plays out in court will not effect my opinion.

Fair enough?

I have a question. You call 911 and they tell you not to leave the house.

So you leave the house with a gun? What do we have cops for?

That's what Zimmerman did and he should AT LEAST be charged based on that. This incident wouldn't have happened if he had listened to the 911 operator and stayed inside.

To bust into the wrong house with a no knock they shouldn't have, and shoot the dog. That's why we have cops.

On a more serious note, the police can do only so much. Most of the time they just fill out paperwork.

I'm with Zeke on this one... If there hadn't been a gun at the confrontation, regardless of who was the aggressor, no one would have been shot dead.

I dislike cops as much as the next guy but you're suggesting vigilantes are better?

Again, if Zimmerman had listened to the 911 operator and hadn't left the house with a gun a 17 year old kid (who still has some growing up to do if the pro-Zimmerman guys are to be believed) would still be alive to learn his lessons and become a productive member of society.

Prince Georges County, MD cops specialize in this tactic. Moreover, they did it to a local politician. Nice touch.

They like to say they are there "To Protect and to Serve". In reality, they are there to enforce the law. They do that by documenting infractions, collecting evidence, and arresting suspects. This is a pretty indirect method of protecting, and is only effective if the courts penalize the guilty such that they are discouraged from, or unable to, continue their illegal activity.
Other than detectives assigned to high profile suspects, the odds that a cop will be there to witness and/or stop a crime are slim to none.

Can you point me to a source? I've not heard anything about Zimmerman being told to stay in his house. The 911 tape I heard didn't involve Zimmerman being in a house at all, nor was a house ever mentioned, other than the clubhouse as a location reference.

You can mince my words I suppose. The 911 operator told Zimmerman not to follow/pursue/investigate, etc. Any other synonyms?

We've been over the 911 call already, and you are incorrect. Go listen again.
