His hope, along with that of many others since Nixon, was that opening the door to China and expanding their industrial output akin to Japan and Germany after WWII, would hasten their evolution towards a more democratic system while opening their markets to our products. You act as though there was nefarious intent in involved.
AFAIK, Bill and Chelsea Clinton did not have manufacturing arrangements with China like Trump or Ivanka did.
