The problem with your theory is that alcoholics do not drink responsibly and cannot stop at a reasonable amount. If they could.... They wouldn't be an alcoholic. They might have good Intentions, but once they start drinking those good intentions get lost.
I don't condone the use of methadone programs either. I also don't support AAA due to the religious component. But, many people do benefit from their methods.
Your idea of weaning them off alcohol by letting them drink less is like telling a serial killer he will be able to stop killing people if he cuts back to two kills a month instead of five. It just won't work and it doesn't make sense.
