Changed the exhaust manifold gasket and the donut on the downpipe on the S-10. Soooo easy, no rust and room in the compartment! Ran hot too so I swapped the t-stat out to a 180 degree.

Failed echeck, super high NO. Turns out GM has a patent on the EGR, so the aftermarkets don't function very well (they had to change the design a little), THEN, GM in their infinite wisdom decided to source theirs from the same place as the aftermarkets - nobody makes the 'good' part anymore.

New tires. The tire guy is my good friends' kid I know well. He had his younger brother take a look at the exhaust, turns out it had a bad weld, he climbs under it with a grinder and I kick him in the rear (I'm 'Uncle Pete') and chew him out for no jack stand.

He places the stands goes to the jack, starts pumping and immediately the truck fell off the jack!

Fortunately it only bent a tierod end and it turns out all the tierods are bad anyway.

Paint buffed up decently, and I added a 'trunk', a butterfly box:

Forgot about my buddy's Silverado, can't remember if it's an 88 or a 92.

His air squezzer wouldn't kick on, so we unhooked the battery for about 20 minutes and that cured it. Apparently the computer controls the compressor engagement.

Aaaaaaand - it's a short somewhere in the AC control system. I picture the labor charge spinning like an old gas pump, cha-ching! Cha-ching! But with 2 more zeros on it.

Changed the front end steering, new inner/outer tie rod ends and sleeves, drag link, idler. No ball on the pit so it's not a wear part. The inners were truly bad, the idler loose, the drag not loose but not tight either. It's WAY better, nice and tight, and I can forget about it for a number of years.

The exhaust manifold still leaks, it must have a crack, I'll change it to a cast one. The wire on the o2 sensor is off! I changed it before the echeck and it was fine when I did the manifold gasket, it might have been broken internally. Changing that and the EGR tonight then off to echeck in the AM.

Can I ask a question about cars here?
My son's truck is broken. He thinks his 'rear end went out'.

Does anyone know what that means in terms of $$ ? The Bank if Mom needs to brace herself.

Barbara his best bet if it is not a late model is the friendly neighbourhood scrap yard. Or if he is at all mechanical re-build the one he has.

We need make/model/year of the truck. Auto transmission or straight drive? Engine size?

Kind of depends on what actually went out.

Since he "thinks" he knows, I'd start by taking it to someone who "does".

Differentials seldom go out. He may have something as simple as a bad tire.

Yeah, maybe on an older truck an axle bearing? Brakes? Could be many things.

Does it cool if you run a hot to the compressor from the battery?

If it does, why not just fuse the new wire & control it with a toggle switch under the dash? Provided the idle isn't too low since the computer doesn't know the airco is running.
