French wine is good, but overrated, IMHO. Honestly, the finest wines in the world are....American. And, I'm not just saying that, I believe it to be true. We have some great wineries right here, in Virginia--Horton is my favorite. California is certainly no slouch either.
I spent a week in France in 1983. Cannes, Nice and Toulon.
Hanging out in Toulon is kinda like vacationing in Newport News. Industrial, gritty shipyard town.
Cannes and Nice are fantastic. I'd go again in a heartbeat.
I had no problem with the French. From my experience, so long as you at least attept to speak French while you're there, they are not nearly as rude. Try to shout English (With an American accent.) at them......You might as well just pack up and go home. The rest of your visit WILL suck.
It also helps if you frequently tell them how beautiful it is and praise the food. The French have huge egos.
