Up next – Weather Report – Heavy Weather – half speed master.

Just finished rehabbing a pair of speakers. By the time it was over, it was more than a rehab; they're bionic speakers.

Started with a pair of ADC 303AX – solid walnut cabinets. Scrubbed them down with Murphy's Oil Soap, and added five coats of Tung Oil. Took out all of the old gunk that had held the grills on and replaced it with Velcro.

As long as I had the drivers out, I figured I'd recap, and as long as I had the back plate off, I thought I'd add binding posts. Didn't like the high and mid switches, so I used the point on the plate where the switches had been for the binding posts - the original terminals were too close together for binding posts. Replaced the electrolytic cap with a Dayton poly.

Put them back together - no sound. Pulled the plates back out to see if I had miswired or had a short. I had a complete circuit from the positive post to the negative post. DOH! The back plate was aluminum, and I hadn't insulated the binding posts.

Replaced the aluminum plate with some fiberboard and resoldered. Got everything back together, and the old cone tweeter was rattling. Well, it turns out that the woofers weren't original anyway, so I replaced the tweeters with some I had pulled from some Mission 707s with fried woofers.

So now I have some beautiful cabs filled with new/old drivers and new electronics, and have been checking them out with the above playlist. For something thrown together, they sound pretty good.
