How seriously do other countries take them? In the UK they're fairly weak. You can use 'reasonable force' (define reasonable) to remove trespassers from your house, but use of a deadly weapon (kitchen knife, golf club etc.) would get you remanded in custody until the trial, and it would be you that was on trial.

There are exceptions, breaking into a military base being one of them but even then there'd be a full inquiry afterwards.
