It's a pragmatic policy, society is better off if we get these consumers out from under debt. It will be good for the economy. And the loans are handed out freely, to very young people with no good understanding of what a burden they can be, and who see no good alternative for their educational aspirations in the face of tuition-through-the-roof. They deserve relief at least as much as the 1% deserved a trillion off their taxes....
