I remember having an African American teacher in junior high. I think it was in social studies. One of my classmates used the term "nigra." The teacher pointed to the part of her anatomy that allowed her leg to bend and had him identify it as a "Knee." Then she asked what a healthy plant does: "grow." From that point forward, everyone in the class understood the correct pronunciation for the word.
