It's not clear at all why he shot him. I'm speculating, just like you are. Can't pervert the truth unless you know the truth. You and I don't know the truth.
From what I've heard, the shopping was all done, unless he was shopping for trouble.
If Zimmerman was just out to shoot a black kid, why would he have called the police prior and asked them to send someone? Could've just capped him and walked away unanimous.

It's intentional. It makes it harder to make a positive ID. I see it regularly - black, white, hispanic, martian.
One thing I've noticed about the 'nice' inner surburbs, where you'd better have bars on the windows if you know what's good for you. You are FORCED to accept it. You are not allowed to enforce a better neighborhood atmosphere.
It's a shame this young man died, but this whole thing is turned on its' head. What would normally be considered a good thing, a resident voulenteers to police his neighborhood. That would be a GOOD neighbor btw.
He spots a kid who looks shady and keeps an eye on him. The kid ATTACKS him, he reacts. And he's the bad guy.
I'm glad my neighborhood is 100% armed. Strange but we haven't had any murders...

Perhaps an effort to establish "reasonable fear." Only the shadow knows.

If you shoot someone unanimously, you don't need to establish any defense, nobody knows you did it. Wipe off fingerprints, throw down the weapon you bought on the street, go home and have a beer. It's done all the time by the gangs, works pretty good for them.

That shows an inherent lack of knowledge about either gangs or the city.
Nearly universally, authorities know precisely who shot who (as does the public).
What you don't have is witnesses and there are a dozen (false) alibis.
It's just impossible to make a case but you KNOW who did it.
