The Iowa farming community I grew up in during the 80s and 90s was steeped in these institutions, which vampirically drained my family and community’s economic momentum. Many of our church’s leaders attended Oral Roberts University, named for the televangelist most associated with the “prosperity gospel”, which explained that your financial success or failure was directly tied to your Christian morality.


Hysterical fear of a coming soci@list takeover of America was at the heart of both the conservative movement of Barry Goldwater and the apocalyptic fever of evangelicals. Throughout the 90s, our Left Behind rapture novels and televangelists like Pat Robertson linking the Book of Revelation with the day’s headlines kept us in a constant state of panic, ready to blindly follow any conservative huckster with a surefire escape plan.

In addition to fears of Armageddon, the existential fear that you’re spending too much time at work and too little with your family is a common tactic among evangelicals preaching finance. Multilevel marketing companies (often pejoratively referred to as “pyramid schemes”) like AmWay are often founded by evangelicals, and use churches as recruitment centers, offering the opportunity to “be your own boss” and have more family time. (This was a common refrain at Life Surge as well.)

Believers are often encouraged to go deep into debt for these schemes, told to employ a “fake it till you make it” approach, growing their businesses and living a flashy lifestyle long before any profit comes in.

There's little doubt that Evangelism is nothing but a grift and has been so ever since the whole Prosperity Gospel nonsense got started in the late 19th Century. Trump's "spiritual advisor" Paula White is a good example of this type of rip-off artist.

We recently has a family member exposed to a church-based program *promising financial plenty* if one bought participated in their "success through faith and positive attitude" program, which required signing up to tithe to start. Heavy pressure tactics--if you trust in the Lord and want to be a part of this church, you will do this! The promise and the pressure mark this as rank exploitation.

Paraphrasing, then: If this wasn’t a function of politics, it is an act of heinous violence that represents precisely the sort of horrible, surging crime that Fox News has been warning its viewers about endlessly for weeks. If it was a function of politics — presumably politics that cast Pelosi negatively — then it’s simply division, something that lamentably reflects our nation’s sad state under Biden.

It is admittedly hard to speak off-the-cuff on television, though this is DeAngelis’s job. But again, her arguments did not occur in isolation. They were just one early segment. You can also see Fox News hosts and guests downplaying the “where is Nancy” question, blaming the city’s politics and, of course, somehow, “defund the police.”

Where DeAngelis landed, though, is precisely where you’d expect a Fox commentator to land. If it wasn’t politically motivated, it’s because of the crime wave and therefore the Democrats’ fault. If it was, it’s because Biden didn’t unite America … and therefore the Democrats’ fault.

A simple, effective formula.
