New Senate map shows Republicans are increasingly vulnerable
There are now seven Republican seats up for grabs, while only Sen. Doug Jones is that vulnerable on the Democratic side.
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/mee...rable-n1242042
...but they have shown they will go to ANY length to suppress the vote and hang on to power...

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) accused of bribery and abusing his office by 7 top aides
https://www.washingtonpost.com/natio...ffers-bribery/
Quote:
Seven high-ranking staff members have accused Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) of inappropriately using his office, alleging in a letter last week that the state’s top prosecutor engaged in possible crimes ranging from bribery to improper influence.
While the Thursday letter to the human resources director for the attorney general’s office does not detail specific misdeeds, the seven officials say they have asked federal law enforcement agencies to investigate Paxton. The Houston Chronicle on Sunday reported that the lawyers are alleging the attorney general used his office to benefit an embattled investor who donated to his campaign.

‘Unjustifiable hysteria’: Republican recalcitrance about the virus persists even as GOP faces growing turmoil
https://www.washingtonpost.com/polit...d10_story.html
Quote:
Widespread Republican recalcitrance about federal health guidelines showed few signs of waning on Monday, even as the party faces growing turmoil following President Trump’s hospitalization and as more White House aides test positive for the novel coronavirus.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany and at least two of her deputies have now contracted the virus, further derailing the functioning of a West Wing plunged into crisis and adding to a long list of top Republicans who have been infected.
But many Republicans continue to dismiss calls for alarm — and for changes to the party’s message on the virus and its operations.

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/1...e-covid-426817
Quote:
The Republican mayor of Miami said Donald Trump shouldn’t come to his city for the Oct. 15 debate with Joe Biden if the president is still testing positive with Covid-19.
“I don’t think it’s safe, not for him and anybody else, anywhere or anyone he interacts with,” Mayor Francis Suarez told POLITICO.

The GOP Is Sabotaging Trump’s Economy a Month Before Election Day. Here’s Why.
https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020...ction-day.html
Quote:
The reason so many GOP incumbents are more worried about primary challenges than Democratic opponents — and why McConnell is willing to prioritize their purity over aiding his most vulnerable members — is straightforward: The median U.S. state is 6.6 percentage points more Republican than America as a whole.
Thanks to urban-rural polarization — and our Republic’s abundance of scarcely populated rural states — Republicans have a massive built-in advantage in the Senate. This doesn’t just mean that many GOP incumbents hail from places where Democrats are few and far between. It also means that it is very hard for Republicans to ever be more than one solid midterm away from controlling the upper chamber.
In a two-party system, voters who identify strongly with conservative positions on cultural issues have only one partisan option. Combine this fact with the heavy overrepresentation of such voters, and you end up with a Senate GOP that can sabotage the economy a month before Election Day and still retain a shot at retaining power. That is a problem for the Democratic Party. But it’s also a problem for the American polity — one that will cost many Americans their businesses, jobs, homes, and lives in the weeks to come.
|
Too damn many Red states, with far too much power compared to their population, means the Senate will never be "of the people, by the people, for the people". An ever-shrinking minority will control the Senate, to the nation's peril, for years to come.
