I would put it this way: Behind every FAST fortune lies a great crime - or lotto win.
My son is quite wealthy and he did it through unbelieveably hard work and faith. And it all started from being unjustly fired as a truck driver and winning a $10,000 judgement because of it. And he started his company after that event about 15 years ago.
How big is his company? You know that stimulus we all got? His company got $410,000.
BTW, my brother in law is a billionaire. He started his fortune with a trophy company in a small US city. How did he do it? Trophy companies are notoriously unreliable. He made sure that every order was on time, no matter how much midnight oil he burned.
And one of the Programmers I went to COBOL school with was a natural born leader. He and I both started at the same company in the early 80's. We Both moved to the same company about 3 years later, and we both moved from there to the same company seven years later because that company was purchased. At that company he rose through the ranks to become CIO (The role is often called CTO nowadays) of that Fortune 100 company. He retired 11 years ago and cashed in over $9,000,000 in stock options (this is public record).
The belief that people are rich because they are crooked has even less credibility than the belief that people are poor because they have low character. Every case is unique. This has always been true: Work hard and make wise decisions and it will have a positive impact on your bank account. Sit around smoking dope and watching TV and it will, similarly, have a negative impact on your bank account - even if you win the lotto, because you will just throw it all away and be back where you were (and probably worse).
