I've seen Valkyrie and have read a bunch of stuff about WW2.
That was actually a small uprising and it was squashed quickly.
Look into the Soviet Revolution, starting in 1905. The Red vs the White Russians. Military divisions did split along political lines.
But that was different. The Reds had an ideological difference, something to fight about. Just because 40% of the military supports Trump, that doesn't mean they're going to fight the other 60%. Trump is their boss, the Commander in Chief. Of course they say they're going to support him. It doesn't mean the other 60% are refusing to follow the chain of command. It means they won't vote for him in the next election.

Wasn't suggesting detailed similarities between Valkyrie situation and now, just suggesting the movie as a dramatization that could clarify what goes on when a military splits abd fights.
Russian Civil War is actually a good example. So is the Spanish. The main need is two sides that each feel so separate from the other that they are willing to fight rather than submit to the other being in power.
'Loyalty to the chain of command' becomes messy if you have two competing chains of command. Say if Trump fails to win reelection, but says the defeat was due to fraud, and he's still rightful President on January 20th....

For better or worse, the elected candidate, selected by the EC, is the lawful sitting POTUS and CiC holding executive authority.

Somebody would need to arrest him, or subdue him immediately so he couldn't access the nuclear launch guys.
This is messed up world we live in.
I believe in the Book of Revelation (Christian Bible). Don't see a nuclear holocaust predicted in our future.

What Your Dear Leader is saying he "really" won, and saying the EC winner is leader of a treasonous plot? What if you believe it? What if you're in the army, and your colonel believes it?

Arrest and subdue require at least the threat of violent action. If there are those on his side who would use violence, the war would be on.

I can see now how a split in the military could happen.
It would not be a splinter group leaving and misappropriating hardware along the way.
It would just be a break down in the chain of command.
Strange times we live in.

I personally have no confidence in the judgement of anyone that thought this vainglorious incompetent grifting con-man was worthy to the post of CiC, and damn grateful to no longer be at the bottom of the chain of command to have to make the decision to refuse to support it in any way.
