There was a pair of AR18 speakers sitting on a cabinet in the basement of an estate sale. The corner of one dinged a bit, and they need surrounds but outside of that they look pretty good. They were 10 bucks, but it was half price Sunday so I got them for 5. I looked at a couple of AK threads and they appear to be well liked.

From the Teledyne era, made in Malaysia, I think, certainly in Asia. Pretty decent speakers but quite different from the Vilchur era speakers.

Easy fix, with a little effort and $$ will have a very nice nice pair of speakers. Or just save the tweeters and drivers for another project even.

The only real gear repair I do is spraying roached contacts with Deoxit, and surround replacement . But I've done a lot of it. A fault is being a bit perfectionistic...so they typically turn out pretty good. I won't keep these, but I have noticed some auctions for the tweeters and woofers out of these and these parts seem to go for pretty good money. It's too bad somebody dinged the top front corner of one of them which I think would take a lot of the value out of selling them as a pair.

So I got greedy and missed out on a pair of JBL 2800 speakers. I went into the City Thrift on Friday and they were $38.00, but they said that today was half price day. Got in before 9:00 this morning, but that was too late. Didn't need them, since I am in herd thinning mode, and they wouldn't have made the cut of the top ten or so pairs of speakers that I will ultimately keep, but they would have been fun to play with.

Regards,

D-Ray

They are surprisingly decent sounding speakers. But more then a few I have come across needed tweeters. Most of the time that is why they were donated would be my guess.

I had a pair of 2600 that I liked. My son uses them now.

I have seen those several times never have felt the urge to buy them.
Once you have KEF, Snell, Timeframes, AR4x, Klipsch RB-5 it becomes redundant.
I have the JBL 4406 Monitors.

I am at the point where I want to buy only if it is dirt cheap, like the Mitsubishi stuff I found last week.

The cool thing about the military thrift store I have near my clinic is that it does not do the ebay pricing thing; it took me 6 years of regular visits to come across the 4406s and the Mitsu power amp though.

A garage sale guy gave me a pair of Polk Monitor 5's one time. It was Sunday afternoon and he didn't want to bring them back in the house. They were pretty darn good sounding. I have them to a friend who had some POS mini system along with a little Pioneer receiver I got from the Goodwill for 4.99. Viola! Great hifi for next to nuttin'.
