Three Florida Ku Klux Klan members and current or former corrections officers were arrested Thursday by the FBI for allegedly plotting to kill a black inmate after his release. The planned murder was apparently an attempt to seek revenge after a fight between one officer and the inmate.

Two Klan members work for Florida’s Department of Corrections. The third Klan member no longer works for the state’s prison system.

The arrests are the latest stain on the Florida prison system’s reputation. Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican, has driven the privatization of the state’s prison system. This, critics say, has resulted in deplorable conditions in the prisons and jails, including violence and abuse. The effects of privatization were documented in a Huffington Post investigation last year. The overcrowding and underfunding of the state’s prison system contributed to 346 inmate deaths last year, a record high, according to a report by The Florida Times-Union.
