Y'know dave...I expect that a certain percentage of cops will always be abusive. Being willing to deliver physical discomfort to alleged perps is a large part of the personality profile wanted on the job. They get pissed off and react in the way they've been trained to react. So hearing about these incidents is less annoying to me than the ignorant excusers and apologistas who, faced with incontrovertible evidence of the abuse, go on with their stupid statements in defense of the behavior.

Well, we just had two sheffiff's deputies fired for misconduct here in Montgomery County, OH. The NAACP had one of their cell phones--they had made racist comments and jokes back and forth. One was a captain, too.

One of the texts caught my attention for another reason. It went like this: "Watching history channel on MLK. Showing old films of restaurants in the south. It would have been fun to beat up coloreds because they came to your restaurant."

I've seen no comment on it, but I say he also needed to be fired for finding the idea of beating people up 'fun.'

It is interesting that the police did not investigate ANYTHING he claimed re his alibi. The Circuit Attorney's office followed the PD lead. The investigative reporter from the weekly rag was the one who proved his innocence, by actually investigating his alibi by doing the legwork. Then the Circuit Attorney tried to subpeona the weekly the day before they went to press. What a great police effort!

That's pretty ugly and why -- even if you feel that way -- public cell phones are not for personal conversations.

Hmmm.... Why would Sheriff Plummer be contacting DoJ? Could it be that, in the process of investigating the texts, he unearthed evidence that one or both of the fired officers had violated someone's civil rights?

It sounds like Sheriff Plummer has handled this situation very well indeed. In a lot of departments the first response would be to try to sweep everything under the rug as we saw in Seattle recently.
