The author of that piece has obviously never lived down here or he would realize that dissing Presidents is the favourite American pastime, just watch any car dealer's TV commercials.

That's true, but it has been taken to a whole new level in Obama's case due to right wing racism.

Actually...at one time the government of this country was interested in making it as manageable as possible for as many people as possible to get to the polls and vote. Now, of course, only one of the parties is actually interested in this noble effort.

Why is election day always the first Tuesday in November?

The Question:

Why did Congress (in 1845) select the first Tuesday in November as Election Day?
The Answer:

We found a terrific response to your question at the web site of the Federal Election Commission. Here's how they explain it:

". . . For much of our history, America was a predominantly agrarian society. Law makers therefore took into account that November was perhaps the most convenient month for farmers and rural workers to be able to travel to the polls. The fall harvest was over, (remember that spring was planting time and summer was taken up with working the fields and tending the crops) but in the majority of the nation the weather was still mild enough to permit travel over unimproved roads.

Why Tuesday? Since most residents of rural America had to travel a significant distance to the county seat in order to vote, Monday was not considered reasonable since many people would need to begin travel on Sunday. This would, of course, have conflicted with Church services and Sunday worship.

Why the first Tuesday after the first Monday? Lawmakers wanted to prevent election day from falling on the first of November for two reasons. First, November 1st is All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation for Roman Catholics. Second, most merchants were in the habit of doing their books from the preceding month on the 1st. Apparently, Congress was worried that the economic success or failure of the previous month might prove an undue influence on the vote!"

For more information, see our section on U.S. Elections.

Using the economy to unduly influence a voter? It's an outrage!!!!!!

So...OK right-wingjobs...honestly now, which party looks bad in light of this? I await the raging convolutions in 4...3...2...

PS - if everybody voted, the GOP would never win another state-wide or national office again. They'd still probably have a majority in the US House since so many House districts are cabbageville backwaters full of ignorant clockstoppers. But that would be it...and they know it. OK...OK...they'd still have both Senate Seats in Utah, Wyoming and Idaho.

I think you are whining about some folks identifying Reich Wingers with the old time Sieg Heil bunch?

Let's look at it this way: is there anything wrong with racist, authoritarian warmongers? Seems to me that calling people on such attitudes, when they show up, makes sense.

Now, if someone were to be born in Kenya, is there, per se, anything wrong with that?

Cry me a river.

I can show reasons to call Bush a Nazi.

What have you got on Obama as a witch doctor?
