Zimmeran has two huge hurdles to get over.
I heard a 20 year veteran of the Miami PD explain. As long as he was in his SUV following Trayvon he was just fine because he was in his personal space. The minute he exited the vehicle to pursue Trayvon on foot, armed with a weapon, he ceased to be a neighborhood watch guard and became a play cop. It is not legal for a citizen to chase (stalk) another citizen with the intention of stopping him, detaining him, questioning him, and or using deadly force to stop him. That is the job the police who were on their way, To bad they arrived five minutes too late.
The other problem is that the actions of Zimmerman gave Trayvon the right to "stand his ground". Zimmerman can't use that defense. He was the one chasing Trayvon. Trayvon had every right in the world to bust his nose and beat, what he thought was an attacker, head on the sidewalk. I see no evidence of that actually happening at all though.
Here is my personal opinion of what happened. Zimmerman chased Trayvon down and pulled the gun on him. Then he told him to lay face down on the ground, while doing his best cop impersonation, and was going to hold him at gun point until the cops showed up. Things went terribly wrong at that point. Trayvon started to scream for help. At that moment, for whatever reason, Trayvon was shot and killed by Zimmerman. who perpetuated the entire incident in the first place.
